In 1962, Jean Cocteau wrote a message for the occasion, and since then, it has been celebrated annually on March 27th, which marks the anniversary of the opening of the “Theatre of Nations” season in 1962 in Paris. The ITI, along with its 85 centers worldwide, encourages colleges, schools, and theatre professionals to participate in this event.

The importance of theatre in society is immense, and World Theatre Day serves as a reminder of its value and contribution. Theatre provides a platform for people to express their thoughts and ideas, and it allows audiences to engage with stories and characters in a unique way. Theatre is a reflection of society, and it has been used to address social, political, and cultural issues, to raise awareness, and to inspire change.

World Theatre Day 2023

The theme for World Theatre Day 2023 is “Theatre and a Culture of Peace.” This theme highlights the role of theatre in promoting a culture of peace and non-violence in society. Theatre has always been a medium for social change, and it has been used to address issues such as conflict, war, and human rights violations. The theme for World Theatre Day 2023 encourages theatre communities around the world to reflect on the role of theatre in promoting peace and to explore ways in which theatre can contribute to building a peaceful society.

The celebration of World Theatre Day also provides an opportunity to address the challenges facing the theatre industry. Theatre is an art form that relies heavily on live performances, which have been greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has caused many theatres to close down, resulting in a significant loss of income for theatre professionals. World Theatre Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the challenges facing the theatre industry and to explore ways in which theatre can adapt to the new reality.

Importance of Theatre in Digital Technology

One way in which theatre can adapt to the new reality is through digital technology. Digital technology has been used to stream live performances, making it possible for audiences to experience theatre from the comfort of their homes. Digital technology has also been used to create new forms of theatre, such as virtual reality and augmented reality, which offer new ways of experiencing theatre. However, the use of digital technology in theatre raises new challenges, such as issues of copyright, accessibility, and the quality of the experience.
